Reception Celebration of Learning

The Reception Team would like to say a big thank you to all the parents that attended their rock painting afternoon last week. The children had a fantastic afternoon and the rocks look amazing. They will be used to enhance our outdoor area.

Afternoon Tea

On Thursday 8^th February, our half termly Afternoon Tea returned once again for the winners of this terms terrific ticket draw.  This is aimed at rewarding those children who consistently display, not only excellent behaviour, but are also polite and thoughtful to others and have a positive attitude towards learning. Parents of the winners were invited to join their children and the Pastoral Team in enjoying afternoon tea. It was a wonderful afternoon and lovely to see all of the children celebrating with one another and their parents.

Wear Red Day
WOW! It was amazing to see so many children wearing their red clothes in support of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and NSPCC Numbers Day. We have raised a total of £292.81. All of the money raised will be split between the two charities. Thank you for your generosity.

Year 4 Celebration of Learning

Many thanks to the adults who came along to celebrate all of the learning that has taken place during the Year 4 'Active Planet' topic. The children were really proud of the fantastic models that they made and have thoroughly enjoyed learning about natural disasters. It was wonderful to see that the children had retained so much information from the topic and had a fun time during the quiz! They’re already looking forward to the next topic 'Inventions that Changed the World'.

Year 4 Art Project

This week, a group of budding artists from Year 4 were invited to take part in a local art project at St Peter’s School along with a number of other schools from the area. They found out about many different artists and styles of painting. As well as this, the children had the chance to create their own piece of artwork, on a canvas, in the style of Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein.

Year 2 Celebration of learning

On Thursday this week, the Year 2 children had their Celebration of learning for their Circus Topic. The children were joined by family members to create a popcorn box. They had already designed and prepared a prototype and with the help of their parents, they put the final product together. This formed part of their DT work linked to their topic 'Circus'. All of the children went home with a box full of popcorn!

Christmas Enterprise Markets

A big thank you to all of the parents that attended our very first Christmas Enterprise Markets. We are overwhelmed by the amount of positive feedback and support we have had. The children have thoroughly enjoyed every second of making their products and selling them to you. As a few of you will be aware, the children have been competing against their classmates and other year groups to see who could make the most profit. The winners will be announced in tomorrows assembly so keep checking for updates.

Year 6 Indoor Athletics

Congratulations to our Year 6 Athletics Team who won their heat of the North East Lincolnshire School Sports Partnership on Wednesday 15^th November 2017.  They competed in multiple track and field events against seven other schools.  They had a fantastic morning supporting and encouraging each other, we are very proud of their success.

                                                       Year 2   Crash Bang Wallop!

On Wednesday our Year 2 classes visited the Central Hall to take part in a musical event led by a professional musician. We all took percussion instruments and learnt new songs and played along. The children had great fun and were very well behaved. 

Year 6 - Time Tunnel

“This is actually really difficult!” said one parent whilst scratching her head with a pencil.

The children in Year 6 prepared a challenging quiz to complement their work on the ‘Time Tunnel’ unit of study. Each child had worked collaboratively within a team to produce a body of information detailing a given period of history. These included: The Bronze Age, The Stuarts, The Victorians and World Wars. Their work was then displayed- in chronological order- on a giant year group time line down the corridor.

It was great to see so many parents getting involved and working side-by-side with their children to tackle the quiz… things were getting quite competitive!

Year 5 - Mission to Mars

What a fantastic turn out to the Year 5 Celebration of Learning. Both parents and children loved showcasing their books and projects. The children thoroughly enjoyed broadcasting LIVE news from NASA space station. 

Mayoral Assembly

Our School Council has now been formed and we celebrated with a special assembly on Thursday. The Mayor of Grimsby attended our assembly as our special guest and awarded our newly elected councillors with their yellow jumpers. We look forward to working closely with our School Council and hearing their views and ideas on improving our academy.

Harvest Festival

New Age Kurling

On Wednesday 11^th October three teams from Old Clee participated in the North East Lincolnshire Schools New Age Kurling competition at Clee Fields Sports Hall.  There were 16 schools in total competing for the title.  Old Clee B finished third in group A and both Old Clee A and Old Clee C finished runner up in theirs. This meant team A and C qualified for the quarter finals.  Old Clee A played some superb Kurling but were narrowly defeated and exited the competition at this stage.  Old Clee C team were playing some very tactical Kurling and demonstrated exceptional nerve and concentration to win the entire competition.   A fantastic time was had by all that attended. 

Football Team

The Year 5/6 football team competed in the ESFA schools football tournament.  The tournament was played in a round robin format which sees all schools playing against each other with the winners being the ones with the most points at the end.   Old Clee played against Ormiston South Parade, Healing, St. James', New Waltham and Grange.   The team were unbeaten throughout and only conceded one goal.   The children demonstrated fantastic team work and were supportive and encouraging throughout the competition. We now go through to the Humberside finals in December.

Year 6 Tag Rugby Team

10 children from Year 6 competed in a rugby competition at Cleethorpes Rugby Club on Thursday 28^th September. The group stage saw them drawn against Wybers, Enfield and Scartho.  It was a very tight group with three teams finishing on the same points. This meant progression to the next round was determined by goal difference.  Unfortunately Old Clee just missed out on a place but all of the children did themselves and the school proud with not only their performances but also with their sportsmanship. Respect and positivity was displayed throughout.

Year 4 Basketball Team

On Tuesday 26^th September and Tuesday 3^rd October, three girls and three boys from Year 4 attended a basketball event at Grimsby Institute.  The first week consisted of skills in preparation for the competition which took place in the second week.  They played four games, narrowly losing the first one, before going on to be unbeaten in the following three.   They finished as runners up in their group and qualified for the third fourth place play in which they were beaten by one goal.  The children’s attitude, effort and sporting behaviour was second to none.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Thank you to everyone for their generous donations for the Macmillan Coffee Morning Cake Sale. It was a fantastic afternoon with a huge selection of cakes. We would like to say a special thanks to Deli-Licious and their family for their donation of freshly baked cakes. The afternoon was a great success and it was wonderful to see so many happy faces coming together to support what we’re sure you will agree, is a charity close to many people’s hearts. We raised a grand total of £294.55, all of which will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you again for all of the support shown.

Year 6 BBQ & Graduation

Thank you to all the friends and family that came to support our first Year six graduation. The ceremony itself was an intimate affair with each child receiving their hard-earned certificate and a special keepsake gift from the academy. The barbeque, music and entertainment were enjoyed by all and thankfully, the thunderstorms stayed away for what proved to be a very special occasion. We wish all Year 6 children the very best of luck as they begin their journey into secondary education.

Sports Days

We would like to thank all parents for their patience with Sports Days. Unfortunately the weather was not ideal on the original days which meant that they had to be cancelled. We tried out best to re-arrange and thankfully the weather held out. It was wonderful to see all of the parents showing their support for the children and we hope that it was thoroughly enjoyed by all  involved. 

Year 5 & 6 Sports Day

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed their sports afternoon on Monday this week.

Humber Taiko Drummers

Year 4 had a visit from the Humber Taiko drummers and took part in workshops during the day. They performed to Year 5 at the end of the day!

Year 3 Spelling Bee

On 25^th May 2017, Mrs Upson took a handful of Year 3 children to Lisle Marsden Academy to compete in the Great Grimsby Spelling Bee. There were also 25 other Year 3 children in the audience who cheered the team on and also completed their own spelling sheets. Mrs Upson was extremely impressed by everyone’s behaviour and by how all of the pupils, both on stage and in the audience, worked together, helping and encouraging each other. They were all a real credit to the school.

Unfortunately they stumbled upon a couple of tricky spellings and didn’t quite win the competition. However, we are exceptionally proud to say that they achieved the 2^nd highest score of the day.

Well done to all of the children involved!

Year 4 Exit Point – Active Planet

On Wednesday 24^th May the Year 4 parents were invited in to school from 2.30pm to join in with the Active Planet Exit Point. The children had the chance to show their parents all about what they had been learning throughout this topic and were even able to create some models. It was lovely to see the interaction between the children and their parents.

Year 1 Exit Point – Our World

On Thursday 25^th May Year 1 had their Exit point for the topic that they have recently been studying – ‘Our World’. They had a fantastic afternoon showing their parents everything they have been learning about Andy Goldsworthy. They worked hard to collect lots of natural materials on Wednesday ready to make a beautiful sculpture with their parents. It was a wonderful afternoon and great to see the children sharing all of their hard work with their parents.

Year 5 Girls Cricket

On Tuesday 23^rd May, a handful of our Year 5 girls participated in a Cricket Competition at Cleethorpes Cricket Club. The girls were a little unsure to start with as they had never played as a team before. However as the day progressed they grew in confidence and showed some fantastic team skills. It was a wonderful and sunny day and the girls should be exceptionally proud of their efforts. Well done to Tamsin, Katie, Maddison, Phoebe, Ruby, Grace, Alexia and Eveie.

Welholme Trophy Finals

Having qualified as one of the best 7 teams in North East Lincolnshire in October the Year 4/5 football team competed in the Welholme Trophy Finals night. It was a glorious evening but tough for the children as it was so hot and due to injuries we didn’t have any substitutes. Despite this, Callum, Cody, Kieran, Shay, Finley, Betty and Mackenzie played some of the best passing football we’ve ever seen from a team so young. The effort and determination from the children was outstanding.

The children lost only one game out of the six that they played which left us with 11 points. They finished as runners-up with only one goal difference. A superb performance from all involved with lots of great support and encouragement from the parents and families who came to watch.

On a very wet Wednesday evening the girls football team competed in an eleven team tournament. The girls played Scartho and won 2-0. They then lost to St James' and in their final group game they beat Wybers Wood 3-0.

Afternoon Tea 

Every day a child in each class is awarded with a ‘Terrific Ticket’, these are given out in recognition of those children that do the right thing day in and day out, without ever making a fuss. The tickets are collected in class and at the end of every half term a draw takes place. The winner from each class is invited to enjoy afternoon tea with their parent/carer and the pastoral team.

On Monday 22nd May the third Afternoon Tea took place. This time it was slightly different and held in the KS1 hall which meant that all of the children and their parents could celebrate together. The afternoon was a delight and we even got to use our new teacups and cake stands.

Year 3 Relaxation Techniques 

Miss Hazlewood is currently introducing relaxation to all of the Year 3 children. They have been learning about why relaxing is important and practising a number of techniques to help them do this. This week they took part in some visualisation.

Some of the ways relaxation can benefit your child:

• Reduces stress and anxiety
• Helps to feel calm and happy
• Relaxes muscles and calms the nervous system
• Helps children to sleep
• Promotes general good health
• Helps clear your child's mind
• Promotes more clear, balanced thinking
• Improved focus, concentration and memory

Year 4 Magna Trip 

On Wednesday 3rd May, Year 4 visited Magna, here's what they had to say about the fun day they had - 'We had a 

magna-ificent trip to Magna! We participated in a volcano workshop and investigated the four pavilions: Earth, Fire, Air and Water!'

Disco Dance Day 

It has been a pleasure to see all of the children so enthusiastic to take part in our Disco Day. They all looked fantastic in their disco clothes. The school has raised a total of £237.38 which will go towards Gracie and Maddie’s fundraising target of £10,000 for Children in Need. Sign Language Club 

Miss Hunter is exceptionally proud of all of the children at the sign language clubs. The children have been practising their signing and have asked if we would share with you a few videos. 

Red Nose Day 2017

What a fantastic day we all had, it was wonderful to see all of the children and even some members of staff dressed in their pyjamas and Red Nose Day themed clothes. We would like to thank you all for your generous contributions, the school raised a total of £367.77. Below are a few photographs of the children throughout the day. 

National Table Tennis Championships

3rd Best Team in England

On Saturday 25^th March the girls’ table tennis team headed to Hinckley for the National Championships.

We left school at 6:45am.  Everyone was very apprehensive as we had no idea what to expect.  We arrived in Hinckley at 9:05am.  As we entered the hall the atmosphere was electric. 

We registered and found the tables that our games would take place on and the girls began to stretch their legs after a long journey. 

Our first match was against St Andrew’s C of E Primary School from Plymouth.  The girls played brilliantly and were unlucky to lose 5-3.  There were some very close games and some cracking rallies.  We were even more impressed with our performance when we found out that 3 of the St Andrew’s team are ranked in the top 20 in England.

Our second match was against The Pilgrim School from Rochester.  We lost this game 7-1.  However, the girls did themselves proud continuing to battle hard and play some amazing table tennis in every game.  Again we found out the opposition had 2 players ranked in the top 20 in England.

It came to the final match against Cliffedale Primary School from Grantham and we knew we were playing for 3^rd or 4^th place.  A win and we would be the 3^rd best team in England! 

The games again were very close and some of the shots the girls played wouldn’t have been out of place in an Olympic Final.  Willow won both of her games, Scarlett and Betty both won one game which meant the match would be decided by Jasmine (just like the semi-finals).  Jasmine started like an express train winning the first 2 ends.  The next 2 ends were very close but Jasmine was just edged out by the Cliffedale player.  So it all came down to the final end, of the final game, of the final match to decide our position.  It was another tight affair with Jasmine being victorious 12-10.

Mr Simpson, the girls and parents were over the moon with the result of the day.

It was an amazing day and experience for all involved.  This was added to when the parents of the competitor’s teams commented on the fantastic attitude and general loveliness of the Old Clee girls.  We have also received a phone call from the coach of The Pilgrim School expressing how much of a pleasure it was to play against the girls and how lovely they were and that they are a credit to Old Clee.

Scarr Wilce Football Finals

Having qualified as one of the best 8 schools in September the boys competed in the Scarr Wilce Finals night on Thursday 23^rd March.

Before we even started the boys were up against it as 2 of our squad dropped out injured so we only had 7 boys for the 7 matches meaning they would all have to play every minute of every match.

The boys played brilliantly for the whole tournament.  They only lost one game, and they didn’t deserve to lose that game, as they played some great football!

We finished the night with 12 points in 4^th place.  The 2^nd and 3^rd teams finished with 13 points and the first placed team had 14 points. 

An amazing performance from the boys.  Therefore, a huge well done goes out to Callum, Cody, Cian, Cameron, Jackson, Mackenzie and Tyler!

Waterstones Visit

On world book day, the children were given the opportunity to ask their fellow class members about the character that they had come to school dressed as and also about their costume. They had a fantastic time doing this and after much deliberation a winner was chosen from each class.  

The winner from each class received a £5.00 book voucher and also a visit to Waterstones along with all of the other winning children. This took place on Tuesday 14^th and Wednesday 15^th March, the children had an amazing time and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the activities at Waterstones. We hope you enjoy looking at the photographs below of the children on their fantastic visit to Waterstones.

Year 4 - Temples, Tombs & Treasures Exit Point 

On Thursday 16^th March Year 4 had their Exit Point for their current topic ‘Temples, Tombs & Treasures’, it was another successful celebration of learning. The parents and children loved creating head dresses and some even turned out 3-D! We would like to thank parents once again for coming in. We are super excited to start our new topic, 'Active Planet'.

School Sports Partnership Cross Country

On Wednesday 8th March, a warm sunny day, some of the children from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 competed in the School Sports Partnership Cross Country competition at Weelsby Woods. It was extremely muddy and the children all tried their hardest for Old Clee.  

The year 3 children ran 800m.

The year 4 children ran 1000m.

The year 5 children ran 1500m.

The year 6 children ran 2000m.

Table Tennis - National Semi-Finals

On Saturday 4^th March the Old Clee Girls Table Tennis Team headed to Blackburn for the National Semi-Finals. The girls were in great spirits and looking forward to playing some tough games of table tennis. We arrived after a long journey at St Bede’s RC school to find 3 halls packed with players, parents and table tennis tables.  Everyone was excited and raring to get started.

In our first game we played Dronfield Junior School.  We won 6-2 with everyone playing some exceptional table tennis.  Even the games we lost were very close (2-3 in best of 5 ends). Our second match was against St Peter’s Primary School from Leicestershire.  It was a stunning match to watch with both teams playing some superb table tennis.  The match end in a 4-4 draw. 

So…

Going into our last match we needed to win to be in the national finals.  To be one of the top 4 primary schools in the country. 

Wow!! Talk about pressure and a whole range of emotions!

The 3^rd and final match was against Great Wood from Morecambe.  To add excitement their number one player was also ranked as England’s number 2.  The match flowed backwards and forwards throughout. 

They won the first game.  0-1.  Willow won her game to level the scores.  1-1.  Jasmine won her game (3-1) to put Old Clee in the lead.  2-1.  Betty then played well and just lost 3-2.  2-2.  Willow then took an end off England’s Number 2 but lost a great game 3-1.  2-3.  Scarlett then played the best table tennis she has ever played to win 3-0 and level the scores at 3-3.  Betty then lost the first end of her last match before coming back to win 3-1.  4-3.

So…

If Jasmine could win her last game Old Clee would reach the National Finals for the first time in their history.

First end Jasmine won 11-4.

Second end she lost 5-11.

Third end she won 11-5.

Forth end she lost 9-11.

So the whole day came down to the final end of the final match.  Win and Old Clee are in the National Finals.

It was a very tense moment.  Luckily Jasmine was as cool as a cucumber.  She played brilliantly and changed ends 5-2 up.  She continued to play the best table tennis she has ever produced and won 11-8.

OLD CLEE WIN!!!  5-3!!!

The girls were over the moon as were the staff and parents and are now looking forward to the National Finals later in March.

A MASSIVE WELL DONE to all involved!!!

World Book Day - 02/03/17

We would like to thank all of the parents and carers for putting so much effort into their children's World Book Day costume. It has been wonderful to see the children dressed as so many different story book characters, they all looked fantastic! There were a number of activities throughout the day including a prize for best costume and also for the best door. Below is a little more information on the design a door competition. We hope you enjoy looking through all of the photographs. 

From the Governors:

Mr Claridge and Mr Long spent a very enjoyable time after school on Thursday looking at all the classroom doors decorated for World Book Day. They made very detailed notes about each door and the book it illustrated and went away to judge which one they thought was best.

They deliberated and then they scratched their heads. They thought some more and scratched their heads some more. This was clearly going to be difficult and so head scratching continued. Finally realising that their heads were getting sore, they concluded that they must make a decision. But they just couldn’t!

It became obvious to them that they liked ALL the doors but for DIFFERENT reasons. Some they liked because they were imaginative; others they liked because they showed individual children’s contributions. Certain doors showed clear evidence of team work whilst others explained what the book was about. All doors were bright, colourful and very artistically created. Doors which included the children’s photographs were another favourite, as were those that illustrated children’s wishes, drawings of Humpty Dumpty and paintings of lions, giraffes and witches. The door depicting a scene from World War I was especially evocative.

Finally they decided that a prize be awarded to each and every class. This was because they recognised all the effort and hard work that children and teachers had expended and felt that they were all worthy of reward.

6JM enjoyed Wolf Brother so much, that they chose the 2^nd book in the series as their next class book.  We can’t wait for it to arrive!

Afternoon Tea 

As part of the new behaviour policy in school, Terrific Tickets are awarded to children with consistently good behaviour. These are designed to acknowledge and show appreciation to children that display good and consistent behaviour. When awarded with a Terrific Ticket the children write their name on the back and place it into their class tub, at the end of each half term the tickets are drawn at random and the winning child from each class is invited in to school to enjoy afternoon tea with their parent/carer and the pastoral team. 

Our first Afternoon Tea was held on Friday 17th February and was a huge success, it was lovely to see children and their parents celebrating their fantastic behaviour and we can't wait for the next one. Below are a few photographs of the wonderful afternoon they had. 

Wear Red Day - 3rd February 2017

On Friday 3rd February the whole school took part in Wear Red Day. One of our pupils in Nursery - Lilly Mortimer was born with a heart condition which meant she had to undergo surgery at a very young age. Here are a few words her Mum had to say about the charity that is very close to their hearts 'Wear Red Day is a day to think about how special our hearts really are. Some children are born with poorly hearts and need help from doctors and nurses to make them better again. Wear Red Day is a day to say thank you to all of the brilliant doctors and nurses that help the poorly children. This year, Wear Red Day is raising money to build a special children's heart operating theatre to help lots of other children like Lilly. Lilly was born with a poorly heart and had to have an operation when she was just one year old. Thanks to all the help and care she received from the doctors and nurses, she is a happy and healthy girl!'

Wear Red Day has been a huge success and we would like to thank everybody for their kind donations. Altogether we have raised £489.57 all of which will be donated towards the new specialist heart theatre. Below are a few photographs of the children in their red outfits. 

Girls Individual Tables Tennis - Humberside Finals

Yesterday (Thursday 2nd February) 4 of our girls travelled to Hull to take part in the School Sports Partnership Individual Table Tennis Finals.  The girls were the 4 qualifiers from N E Lincs and competed against the 4 qualifiers from Hull, East Riding and North Lincs.  

They played in small groups of 4 to start.  Willow and Scarlett won their groups and Jasmine came second.  The 3 of them therefore qualified for the quarter finals.  Betty finished 3rd in her group and went into another group to determine if she would finish 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th.  

Betty won her second group and finished a superb 9th.  

Our 3 quarter finalists were unfortunately  all in the same half of the draw.  This meant that Jasmine played Willow in the quarter finals.  Willow won, but Jasmine put up a good fight (and finished 8th overall).  Scarlett then played Willow in the semi-finals and took more points off her than any other player at the competition, but lost (finishing 4th overall).  

Willow went into the final to try and retain the title she had won last year.  She beat a player form Hull in 3 straight games and became the first primary pupil ever to retain the trophy.

Willow now goes to the national finals in Wolverhampton later in the year.

North East Lincolnshire School Sports Partnership Year 3/4 Sports Hall

Athletics 

On Saturday 14th January the Table Tennis Team were up early.  We left school at 07:30 and headed to Billingham near Middlesbrough for the next round of the competition.  

Having already won the local North East Lincolnshire competition and Humberside tournament before Christmas this was the next step on the teams journey.

The girls performed brilliantly and won their games 8-0 and 6-2.  

The team ethic was fantastic they supported each other, and encouraged each other every step of the way.  They also umpired their own games very fairly and accurately.

A massive WELL DONE to all 4 girls who will be representing Old Clee in the 'National Semi-Finals' in Blackburn in March.
