  • Visible Thinking Routines

Thinking routines are a set of questions or a brief sequence of steps used to scaffold and support pupils' thinking. Researchers designed Thinking Routines to deepen pupils' thinking and to help make that thinking visible.

We are implementing 4 Thinking Routines that match our cognitive abilities.

Thinking Critically – Claim, Support, Question

Thinking Analytically – What makes you say that?

Thinking Creatively – See, Think, Wonder

Thinking Reflectively – I used to think... but now I think

    Claim, Support, Question

The Claim, Support, Question routine helps learners to:

    • Identify and probe claims of fact or belief
    • look for patterns
    • spot generalisations
    • identify assertions

    What makes you say that?

The What makes you say that routine helps learners to:

    • identify the basis for their thinking
    • elaborate on the thinking that lies behind their responses
    • foster a disposition towards evidential reasoning

    See, Think, Wonder

The See, Think, Wonder routine helps learners to:

    • make careful observations
    • make thoughtful interpretations

    It helps to:

    • stimulate curiosity
    • set the stage for enquiry

I used to think ... Now I think...

The I used to think ... but now I think routine helps learners to:

    • reflect on their thinking
    • connect to their prior knowledge
    • explore how their thinking has changed
    • talk about and make their thinking visible to others
