At Old Clee Primary Academy, we are dedicated to raising awareness about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and ensuring the safety and well-being of our pupils. FGM is a harmful practice that affects young girls between infancy and 15 years of age. In the UK, FGM is classified as a form of child abuse, making it a serious child protection concern.

    Understanding FGM

FGM involves procedures carried out on young girls, often without their consent, which can have severe physical and psychological consequences. It is not only illegal but also a violation of human rights to perform FGM in the UK or arrange for a child to undergo the procedure abroad. Those found guilty of carrying out or assisting in FGM can face a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

Whilst all staff should speak to the DSL or deputy DSL with regard to any concerns about female genital mutilation, there is a specific legal duty on teachers. If a teacher, in the course of their work in the profession, discovers that an act of FGM appears to have been carried out on a girl under the age of 18, the teacher must report this to the police.
