These are the end of year targets for the children in Reception.

RECEPTION NEWSLETTER

Home School books 📚

Please bring your yellow home/school contact book to school every day. This book is to inform the class teacher of any change to collection/drop off routines. It is also used to pass messages or information to your teacher and also to enable the teacher to communicate messages back to parents.

Reading books 📖

At the start of the year children will bring home a picture book and a sharing/library book. Please share these at home and encourage your child to tell the story using the pictures.

When the children start Read, Write, Inc they will bring home a sound activity or a reading book linked to their phonics group. Please ensure children bring their reading book to school each day. Please practise reading the sounds and words with your child. We recommend the children read a minimum of 3 times a week at home to continue to develop their skills. Please make a note of your child’s reading in their Reading Record.

Homework

Homework books will be sent out each Friday with an activity for your child to complete at home, please help to support your child in completing this. Homework books will be collected in on the following Thursday and homework will be shared in class.

PE 🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♂️

Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on the correct day. Mrs Hall's class PE is on Monday. Mrs Jones' class PE is on Friday. The children will stay in their kit all day. Please ensure all kit is labelled with your child's name.

💧 Water bottle

Please send your child to school with a labelled bottle of water each day. This is for their use only throughout the day to keep hydrated. This must contain fresh water only. For hygiene reasons, they must be taken home, washed and refilled daily. They must be clearly labelled. Children can refill them during the school day too. Anything other than water will not be allowed to be consumed by your child during the school day unless you can provide written medical evidence from your GP explaining why this cannot be so. On receiving this you will then need to fill in a Medical Health Care plan. See section 4. • If your child has a packed lunch a second drink should be included. However, no fizzy drinks are allowed to be brought into school. Children having school lunches will be provided with water.

We are Reception

Parliament Day

We learnt about where the Houses of Parliament are and why we have a Parliament. We discussed why it is important to have rules and laws. We talked about the importance of listening to other people’s views and being able to vote. We had a class vote to choose which snack to have - apples or crackers? We talked about the pros of each snack and then we posted our vote into the ballot box. It was fun counting the votes to see which snack had the most. We enjoyed our team work challenge to build Big Ben using construction materials - we had to balance the blocks carefully. We also had a debate about whether the school day should be longer. The children had some great ideas for and against! At the end of the day we also voted for the book we would like to read.

Winter ❄️

The Reception children have had a great start back at school after our Christmas break. We have enjoyed talking about Christmas and our presents. We talked about the new year and made special headbands. The weather has turned very cold and we have enjoyed exploring the ice outside and spotting the signs of Winter. We have enjoyed role playing a shopkeeper and customer in the Winter Clothes Shop. We talked about what we need to wear in Winter to stay warm.

Christmas party day 🎉

We had lots of fun on party day! We enjoyed dancing with our friends and playing games such as musical statues, musical chairs and pass the parcel. We even had a very special visitor! Santa came to see us! We sang Christmas songs together and he even gave us all a present.

Old Toys

The elf brought us some old toys to explore. It was fun looking at the toys and working out how to use them. We talked about how the old toys are different to the toys we have these days… although they are still lots of fun!

Wriggly Nativity

We practised for many weeks to learn our lines and songs to tell the Nativity story. We were excited to wear our costumes and go on the big stage to perform to our grown ups. We did a great job and impressed everyone! We sang our songs enthusiastically and remembered all of our lines, moves and dances. Well done Reception!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 🎄

We are counting down the days to Christmas in Reception! We have been busy making Christmas cards and calendars. We have been learning about the Nativity story and practising our show Wriggly Nativity. We have had lots of fun in Santa’s workshop making presents and delivering them on the sleigh. Road Safety Week

This week is Road Safety Week. In class we have enjoyed making traffic lights and stop and go signs. We had a special assembly in the hall. Sue, from the Humberside and Fire and Rescue Service, talked about how we can stay safe when crossing the road. We learnt the special rules - STOP, LOOK, LISTEN AND THINK! Sue used an egg to teach us how important it is to wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter. We also watched the silly family and the smart family in a car crash simulation to show how seat belts keep us safe.

Children in Need

We came into school dressed in our Pudsey clothes, spots, fancy dress or pyjamas for Children in Need. We talked about how the money raised will help children to be safe, warm and happy around the UK. We enjoyed drawing Pudsey bear pictures, creating Pudsey ears and finger painting Pudsey’s eye patch. We even went into the hall to do some special Children in Need dances.

Odd socks day 🧦

As part of Anti-bullying week, we came to school wearing our odd socks to celebrate that we are all different. We shared our ideas on how we can be kind and show respect to others. We had lots of fun sharing our odd socks and making friendship pictures. We enjoyed reading stories about being kind such as “Be Kind” and “The smartest giant in town.”

Remembrance Day

We learnt about Remembrance Day which is on November 11th. It is an important day to remember the brave soldiers who fought in the war. We have been wearing our poppies with pride and we took part in the 2 minutes silence at 11am. We know that a red poppy is to remember the soldiers and a purple poppy is to remember the animals. We have enjoyed drawing our own poppy pictures and making poppies using the playdough. We worked together to make a poppy wreath. We were very proud of our beautiful poppy field painting.

Bonfire night 🔥 🎆

The children have been very excited about the fireworks they have seen and heard over the last week to celebrate Bonfire night. We talked about the colours, shapes and sounds of the fireworks. We used our imagination in The witch’s kitchen to make magic potions.

We have been learning about Autumn and the four seasons. We went on a walk around our school grounds to spot the signs of Autumn. We found lots of different coloured leaves, twigs, fungi, berries and acorns. We enjoyed exploring and describing the objects back in our class.

The little red hen 🐔

We have enjoyed learning the story of The little Red hen. We can retell story using a story map using actions and character voices. The story taught us it is important to be kind and helpful to others. The little red hen even sent us some fresh bread for us to taste - it was delicious!
