SEND Information

Welcome to the SEND area of our website, we hope you find this section useful and that the information gives you an overview of how we help our pupils with Special Education Needs. If you have any queries regarding our SEND provision our SENCO will be happy to help you.

Inclusion – our ethos

The Governing Body and staff of Old Clee Primary Academy are committed to providing an appropriate, inclusive and high quality education for all our children. We believe that all children, including those identified as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum and where possible should be fully included in all aspects of academy life. We aim to give every child the very best chance to succeed by removing barriers to learning and preparing them for a happy and successful future. We aim to foster a sense of community and belonging.

We recognise that pupils learn at different rates and that there are many factors affecting achievement, including ability, emotional state, age and maturity. We are particularly aware of the needs of our Key Stage 1 pupils, for whom maturity is a crucial factor in terms of readiness to learn. However, we also believe in both early identification of need and early intervention. We understand that at some point in their academy career a pupil may experience difficulties which affect their learning and we recognise that these may be long or short term.

Our SENCO and Pastoral team work closely with pupils, parents, teachers, senior leaders and external agencies to ensure we provide the best possible provision for any pupil experiencing difficulties with their learning. In order to do this we remove barriers to learning by following a graduated response. This involves assessing our children, planning and implementing a personalised provision and then reviewing the impact (assess, plan, do, and review).

If your child has a special educational need or disability then it will be discussed with you. If it is felt that your child would benefit from more intensive support, then you will be invited into school to discuss this and possibly refer your child to an external agency for further specialist support. Together we review your child’s progress and plan any the next stages of support. We want to work with parents and carers as much as possible because as parents you know your children better than we ever will. If you have any concerns about your child’s learning needs, please speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance a meeting can then be arranged with the SENCO.

SEND Code of Practice

In 2014 a Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities was agreed and adopted by all schools in England.

Under the 2015 (revised document) Code of Practice, SEND are categorised under the following four headings:

• Communication and Interaction e.g. Speech, Language and Communication needs (SLCN) Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger’s Syndrome
• Cognition and Learning e.g. Specific learning difficulties (SpLD), moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) global developmental delay, dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia, profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties (SEMH) e.g. attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), depression, eating disorders, attachment disorders.
• Sensory and/or Physical needs e.g. visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI) or a multi-sensory impairment (MSI) or Cerebral Palsy (CP) epilepsy

Where pupils have medical needs and special educational needs, we will plan and deliver education provision in a co-ordinated way with their healthcare plan if they have one. We will also follow the statutory guidance on supporting pupils at academy with medical conditions.
