Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Our teaching team consists of 1JL Mrs Leader (Year 1 Lead) and Mrs Hersey

1AR Mrs Rytting and Mrs Boswell

1LH Mrs Hotson and Mrs Challis

Daily Routines

Please ensure that children bring their yellow home/school contact book to school every day. This book is used to communicate messages between home and school such as change of collection details and record such things as weekly spelling scores.

Reading books are to be brought to school daily. The children will have 2 books a 'book bag book' that is linked to their phonic grouping and a library book they have chosen themselves. We encourage home reading as it greatly improves fluency and comprehension skills. Reading a book several times offers reading development - a book can be read initially to sound out new words, a second time to read by sight and a third time for fluency and comprehension.

Coats, Sun hats and Sun cream - please ensure the children are prepared for the ever changing English weather. We do like to embrace the outdoors and have lots of outdoor learning environments that are shaded from the rain, so please bring a jumper/coat/jacket.

Weekly Routines

P.E. for Year 1 will happen every Thursday and this will take place outdoors (weather permitting). Jewellery will also need to be removed prior to the P.E. session for health and safety reasons – this cannot be done by a member of staff so please manage this at home.

Please send children to school in their PE kits. Polite reminder that no logos are permitted. Please see the uniform policy for more information.

Homework - Each week, your child will be given a list of spellings to learn. These spellings will have a specific sound focus to help match their spelling with their phonic knowledge. Please support your child and help them to learn these words. New spellings will be given out on a Friday and a spelling test will take place the following Friday. The maths focus this term will be to learn number bonds to 10 (2 numbers that add to 10). Homework does not need to be handed in but practised throughout the week to support spelling and maths tests.

Reading Challenge

We have introduced new reading records to children in years 1-6. The children have been set a challenge to read a hundred books before the end of the school year. These books will be books provided by school and read at school or at home.

Please watch the following links for a full explanation of how our reading records work.

Autumn 1 Spelling overview

In maths we learn Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFS) to help us with our mental maths and quick calculations. A KIRF will be sent home as homework every fortnight. The children will learn these facts and have a test on them at the end of the two weeks. These KIRFS will roll over each term and be repeated.

Being a Historian - Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed their visit from Bob who was a skipper on the Ross Tiger. He brought some artefacts from his fishing days and talked to the children about life as a fisherman. The children used a brading needle to mend the fishing nets, spliced the ropes and tried on the waterproofs. The children asked lots of questions to find out about the past.

This week, in DT we have made wraps. We learned how to cut and grate safely. We enjoyed assembling and eating our delicious wraps. Yummy 😋

Our fantastic visit to Old Clee Church. We had such a great time learning the history of the church, what people do at church and what Rev. Lynne does for her job.

Well done to the top 3 boys and top 3 girls in year 1. Mr Playford presented them with their 1st 2nd and 3rd place stickers for their combined overall scores.

They even had a special visit from King Miller to judge the best crown in each class!

We ended the day with a whole school conga!

Personal Development Day - Careers Day

We started the day by sharing with each other what we want to be when we grow up. We looked at each other’s outfits and introduced ourselves.
We then had a talk from the NE Lincs Council Road Safety Education Team. We dressed up in a real Lollipop Persons outfit and helped each other cross the road. We talked about the responsibility of a Lollipop Person and what an important job this is. They also told us about their job in the road safety team and the importance of educating children about crossing the road safely.

We then went to see the Fire Brigade and got to sit in the fire engine, try on the uniform and spray the hose. The Firefighters told us how they love their job because they get to help people when they are in trouble.

Next we saw the Paramedics. They showed us how to do CPR and we had to pump the chest to ‘Baby Shark’. We asked them lots of questions about their job and what they needed to do at school in order to be a Paramedic.

We were lucky enough to talk about 2 jobs when the nurse came to talk to us. We talked about the responsibilities of a nurse and how you need to be a very caring person too! In her spare time she loves to write stories. She has just published a book called ‘The Sneaky Tiger’.

Our last visitor was the Street Works Inspector, he told us all about his job and how he tries his best to make sure he keeps the streets looking smart and safe.

The children were able to see that the wild plants grew where the seeds and bulbs got blown by the wind or carried by the animals. They used a plant key to identify the names of the plants they found.

Big Maths- we love taking our learning outdoors! Today we collected 10 things and made a giant numberline to help us count in tens. Ask me to show you how I can count in tens.
