Daily Routines

Please ensure that your child brings the following to school daily:

  • Yellow home (school) contact book
  • Green reading record book
  • School reading book (RWI Book Bag Book)
  • Library book
  • Waterproof coat/jacket
  • Water bottle

It is very important that your child remembers to bring their yellow book to school everyday. This is used to communicate messages between school and home. Please ensure if there are any changes in your child's home time arrangements you write this in. Spelling test scores will also be added to the book weekly.

PE Days

PE is on a Tuesday each week. Please ensure your child comes to school on this day dressed in PE kit and that it is in line with the school uniform policy. Please bare in mind we will try and do PE outside whenever possible so a jacket or jumper will be needed.

Please remember to remove all jewellery on PE days.

Each Friday the children will be given their homework. Year One homework will focus on reading, spelling/phonics and maths. The homework is as follows:

  • spelling/handwriting practice
  • look, cover, write, check spelling sheet
  • learning the fortnightly maths key instant recall facts (KIRFS)
  • reading RWI reading books as frequently as possible (RWI Book Bag Books are matched to their individual phonic knowledge)

Year One spelling Autumn 1 and 2

Year One spelling Spring 1

KIRF Key Instant Recall Fact - these are given in homework to learn for a fortnight - these roll over every 2 weeks

Here are some of the fantastic things we have been doing and learning!

In PE we are looking at object control. We thought of ways we could move whilst balancing the bean bag on different body parts. We learned lots of ball skills and are starting to put a routine together to music ... watch this space!

In DT we have designed a hand puppet. Today we used a running stitch to join the 2 pieces of material together. Next week we will decorate it to look like our character design.

Being a mathematician. As mathematicians this week, we have been counting in multiples of 2 and 10. We have been using what we know to solve problems. Some children from Year 6 have been helping us to use mini counting sticks to practise our times tables.

Being a Scientist. We have been investigating materials. We needed to test which material would be best for teddy to use for his umbrella. We found plastic would be best, so we tested this material outside ourselves.

Being a Geographer. In Year 1 we have been learning about Northern Ireland. We can identify physical features, we know if it is more rural or urban and we can identify it on a map. We even collected lots of facts to build an information sheet.

Children’s Mental Health Week - Who Listens to Me? Year 1 have enjoyed several activities during the week including an assembly from Compass Go, a who listens to me activity and mindfulness colouring laid out on blankets x

Being a Scientist - Year 1 looked closely at the weather in winter by using a thermometer to record the daily temperature, looking at the weather and making a wind vane to record the direction of the wind.

being a Historian - the children enjoyed re-enacting Grim Fest after learning the story of Grim the Danish Viking who rescued Prince Havelock from the Vikings. Legend has it Grimsby was named after Grim x

Today we took part in a Remembrance Day assembly and activities. We had great fun learning new facts and remembering important historical events.

As writers this week we have been learning how to write a fact file. We used the clues in pass the parcel to figure out what creature we would complete our fact files on. We spent time researching and are now experts! Can you guess what we are writing about?

Being a Geographer- Check out our wildlife journey movie using human and physical geography (click on the link below)

Being an Artist - We have been looking at words that describe colour and painting tints and tones like Henri Rousseau. We have also discussed different moods created in painting.

year 1 enjoyed Two’s Day Tuesday this week when they had to complete lots of maths challenges and solve problems all about counting in Two’s. The children started the day by making a crown with a number line in two’s. They then enjoyed activities involving doubles, odd and evens, money, ordering numbers, finding missing numbers, building stacking towers, matching up pairs of socks and lots lots more! What a fabulous day of maths.

As Designers this week, we have been looking at making structures more stable. We built A frames and used an anchor and a brace to strengthen our swing structures. πŸ”¨πŸ”§πŸͺ›πŸͺšπŸ”©βš™οΈ

The season is Autumn x the children have enjoyed creating an autumn box by bringing in colourful leaves, confers and acorns. The children created autumn art using mixed media. They stuck on leaves, used leaves to print in paint and cut out leaves from coloured paper x

National Poetry Day October 5th inspired year 1 to learn and act out some poetry. The children took inspiration from the Poem Book The Train Ride and re-invented it. They enjoyed acting out their very own poem The Bus Ride (see school videos for our recordings). The children are also learning a poem about the seasons to link with their science called Autumn is here ( video to follow shortly)

Being scientists - investigating materials. The children were able to identify items in the classroom made of wood, plastic, glass, metal and rock.

Acting out the Great Fure of London. Someone was the flame trying to get through the houses which were contested and too close together. We saw how the fire spread quickly back in 1666. We then spread out to represent the hoses in 2023 and looked how the fire can travel between the houses.

Being A Writer. We have been looking at clues to decide what characters our new text is going to have. Can you guess them?

Being a Designer - this week we continued our topic on structures. We learned how to strengthen a tower structure and make it more stable using a β€˜flange’.

Being an Artist - this week we have looked at paintings by the artist Henri Rousseau. We used a view finder to look closely at the detail in the painting. We talked about what we liked and disliked about his artwork.

Being a Mathematician - we are looking at numbers to 20. We have shown how we can use the language of more, fewer and the same to compare numbers or amounts. We have demonstrated how we can say one more or one less than a given number to 20 and practised writing numerals and words.

Being a Writer - in writing this week we have read and acted out the story Oi Frog. The children sequenced the story and used picture prompts to recall and re-tell the story by themselves. Look at this fantastic writing! Watch out for this weeks a β€˜reinvention’ as we have changed the characters.

Being a Designer - in DT we are looking at structures. We are going to learn different skills needed to design and make a swing for our small world area. This week we looked at cutting safely.

Being a Geographer - the United Kingdom. We learnt about the 4 countries that make up the United Kingdom. We then found and located the capital city of England and also located Grimsby on the map. We discussed the difference between immigrants and refugees when we talked about people moving to different countries.
