Year 4

Welcome to the Year 4 page. Here you can find key information and hear all about the exciting learning that is taking place in our year group.

Meet the Team

The Year 4 team consists of Miss Winn (4SW), Mrs Jenkins (4CJ), Mrs Hotson (4LH) and Miss Offiler (4EO).

PE Kit

Year 4 pupils will usually have PE on a Tuesday. However, PE kit should be brought into school on a Monday and taken home on a Friday as it means pupils will have their kits if there are any changes to the usual timetable.

Homework

Home work will be sent home on a Friday and returned to school on the following Thursday. Homework consists of a maths activity mat, spellings and times tables.

Maths - Key Instant Recall Facts

Reading - Year 4 children are showing a growing passion for reading! Here are some fantastic questions to ask them as they're reading their books at home.

Sport Relief

Year 4 enjoyed helping to raise money for Sport Relief on Friday 13th March. Pupils donated £1 to come to school in their sports clothes ready for their 'run a mile' activity. The children were given half an hour to attempt to run nine laps of the Key Stage 2 playground - a distance of exactly one mile. We were very proud of the effort and enthusiasm with which Year 4 approached the task - some even had the energy to run extra laps during their playtime and lunchtime!

Nate and Declan

Here are two of our shining stars from Sign Language club. Their facial expressions are an important part of BSL grammar.
Their conversation is as follows:
Nate: What's your name?
Declan: I am Declan. What's your name?
Nate: I am Nate.
Declan: Thank you
Nate: Thank you.

Year 4 Maths Day

Year 4 have spent the day comparing and classify geometric shapes and identifying lines of symmetry in 2D shapes.

Number Day

We had lots of fun working out a number puzzle today. If A = 1, B = 2 and  C = 3 etc what word can you think of that adds up to 50p?

Being Historians

In 4CJ and 4EO, the children have been learning about what life was like as a Spartan and an Athenian citizen in Ancient Greece.

Year 4 have been working on their designing skills this term, planning, producing and evaluating Anglo Saxon homes. They thought about materials, structure and construction - working in teams to communicate, listen and share ideas.

Well done year 4!!

On Monday, we watched a stunning performance by Franklin College students and took part in the dance routines! See below for the pictures of the show. There is more information in the Events section of our website.
For our Maths Day this term, we explored mass and length. The children measured the distance of how far their paper aeroplanes travelled & they weighed various items around the classroom after estimating their weights. We looked at the conversion of metric measurements too.. Challenge your child and ask them - how many grams are in 1 kilogram... how many centimetres are in one metre!

Extra! Extra! Read All About It....

Year 4 have written amazing newspaper reports based on the story of Jack and Jill.... Was Jack pushed?? Is Jill Jealous of Jack's water collection business?

Being a Scientist

We have been learning skills to help us become super scientists. This has been through an experiment based on forces. The children learnt about friction and then put a variety of surfaces to the test, to see which caused the most friction and slowed the toy car down.

Being Writers

In Year 4, the children have been writing newspaper reports on the mysterious case of Jack and Jill. Each class has put their own twist on the classic nursery rhyme to find out who was responsible for Jack's sudden tumble down the hill. See our reporters hard at work!

DT in 4LH

Jorge took the spaghetti bridge materials home to see if he could make a successful bridge.

Take a look at the pictures below. The class loved testing it to see if it worked.

Being Historians...

We have put our historian skills to the test this week! We have been working how to sequence a timeline - placing significant Anglo Saxon events in time order.

Year 4 have been learning the importance of yoga, we have found the benefits can include:

  • Improvement in flexibility, strength, and posture. Daily yoga practice will help stretch and tone your body muscles.
  • Better all-round fitness. ...
  • Weight loss. ...
  • Increase our energy. ...
  • Reduce stress. ...
  • Breathe better. ...
  • Be happier. ...
  • Become more mindful.

We discussed how to connect our minds to our bodies, to really understand the benefits of yoga.

Year 4 had such fun learning about the different types of bridges. They then planned a bridge to construct and then built their design.

Year 4 Poetry Afternoon

This week, Year 4 spent an afternoon with Ian Bland - a local poet. Each child created their own 'Puzzle Poem', with some children being lucky enough to perform these in assembly! All of Year 4 had a fantastic time being Poets for the afternoon. Below are some examples of the Poems from 4CJ, 4LH, 4EO and 4SW from the day. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did!
